When I planned my trip to Loraine, Texas, I was unsure of what to expect. It would be my first real dose of six-man football, and a sweet reminder of a true small town. Like, 650 people small town. It’s right off the highway, covers 1 square mile, and the school sits on a hill to the south, overlooking west Texas for miles.
In the fall of 1909, Baylor alumni received a surprising invitation from their alma mater. A postcard signed by three professors asked the graduates to return to campus to “renew former associations and friendships, and catch the Baylor spirit again.” With that postcard, Baylor Homecoming was born.
Top finishes give Bears wave of momentum
Baylor’s most outstanding runners from past and present were featured on the home track last weekend at the Michael Johnson Dr Pepper Classic. World-class competitors watched as Baylor athletes and 18 other schools competed at the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex.
At 5 feet, 91 pounds, freshman hurdler and sprinter Tiffani McReynolds and her tiny frame reel in curious glances at every track meet. But the back of her extra-small size jersey burns in the minds of her opponents as she shoots out of the block past the rest of the pack.
The track and field squad dove into the record books again last weekend at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin. Seniors Tiffany Townsend and Nick Lyons and junior Woodrow Randall set three university records Saturday.
Dig deep enough into the soul of a fierce competitor. They have pain listed as a state of mind. Hours of preparation will go unnoticed. They aren’t afraid to put everything on the line in the final seconds of the game. They refuse to hold anything back.
Through only the second outdoor meet, Baylor’s track and field squad has claimed 13 events, broken two school records and had 19 performances in the top 15 in the NCAA. At the Bobby Lane Invitational at the University of Texas-Arlington last weekend, Baylor grabbed nine titles.
The track and field squad split into two groups to compete for the second weekend in outdoors fashion. The distance runners headed to Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., while the rest of the crew took Tempe, Ariz., by storm.
Sunday at Baylor Ballpark handed the baseball team chilly weather and a chance to take the three game series against Kansas State. After the 21st ranked Bears rallied to grab a 4-3 win over the Wildcats, they move to 3-3 in conference play.
